Put Your Candy Away

Every Halloween brings excitement for families, but it can also create hidden dangers for pets. While children eagerly sort through their candy haul, curious dogs and cats may see those colorful wrappers as an invitation to investigate. Storing Halloween candy safely out of reach is one of the easiest ways pet owners can protect their furry family members from serious health risks.

Many popular Halloween treats contain ingredients that are toxic to pets. Chocolate is one of the biggest concerns, particularly dark and baking chocolate, which contain higher levels of substances called theobromine and caffeine. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, restlessness, increased heart rate, tremors, or seizures in dogs. Cats are also at risk, although they are less likely to seek out sweets.

Another dangerous ingredient commonly found in sugar-free candy and gum is xylitol. This artificial sweetener can cause a rapid drop in a dog's blood sugar levels, leading to weakness, loss of coordination, seizures, and even liver failure. Because symptoms can develop quickly, accidental ingestion of xylitol should always be treated as a medical emergency.

Even candies that don't contain toxic ingredients can still create problems. Hard candies, lollipops, and other treats can become choking hazards, while wrappers may cause intestinal blockages if swallowed. Dogs in particular are notorious for eating candy whole, packaging and all. What seems like a harmless snack can quickly turn into a costly veterinary visit.

Pets are often more likely to get into trouble during Halloween because of the extra activity in the home. Candy bowls left on coffee tables, treat bags sitting by the front door, and distracted family members can make it easier for pets to sneak a taste. Curious animals may also rummage through backpacks, purses, or unattended trick-or-treat buckets.

To keep your pets safe, store all Halloween candy in secure cabinets, high shelves, or containers with tight-fitting lids. Remind children not to leave candy on beds, counters, or floors where pets can reach it. After parties or trick-or-treating, take a few minutes to collect any dropped treats or wrappers before your pet finds them first.

Halloween should be a fun and memorable celebration for the entire family, including your pets. By putting candy away promptly and keeping tempting treats out of reach, you can help ensure that the holiday ends with happy memories instead of an emergency trip to the veterinarian.
